Other Muscular Pain Conditions

Biofeedback from other tense muscle sites (low back, head, shoulders, neck) has also been shown to be clinically useful. Typically patients use relaxation techniques in conjunction with EMG feedback to reduce the sensations of pain or tension.

Work by David Hubbard and the author has shown that this is probably due to a reduction in sympathetic flow to muscle spindles rather than to a reduction of voluntary muscle action potentials, but more needs to be done to elucidate the exact mechanism or "active ingredient" in the success of EMG biofeedback.
