Diffusely Infiltrative Gliomas

The three types of glioma are the astrocytoma, the oligodendroglioma, and the ependymoma. All these malignancies arise from white matter, and a variety of subtle personality and cognitive changes may be detected before seizures, focal neurologic signs, and hydrocephalus develop. The white matter is also implicated in the neurobiology of gliomas by virtue of the fact that they spread throughout the brain along white matter tracts. The prognosis of these tumors is generally unfavorable despite vigorous surgical and medical treatment.
