The serotonergic, noradrenergic, and cholinergic transmitter systems show changes in their activity as a function of the sleep-wake cycle. These transmitter systems are implicated in setting levels of cortical excitability, which presumably forms the basis for variations in alertness. Nevertheless, it is still the case that very little is understood about how these systems interact to modulate or mediate alertness and varieties of attention in the waking state. The role of glutama-tergic neurons of the mesencephalon, which project to the thalamus and have similar patterns of activation as those of the brain stem cholinergic projections across the sleep-wake cycle, also remains relatively uninvestigated.
