High Altitude Cerebral Edema

Affected individuals may experience an acute confusional state and ataxia, often in association with white matter hyperintensities on MRI that are particularly prominent in the splenium of the corpus callosum. The syndrome is reversible with removal from altitude and supportive care, and it is thought to be due to vasogenic edema that has a predilection for the white matter.
