Lateral Tegmental System

Ventral, medial, and rostral to the inferior colliculus are midbrain structures that have significant ascending connections with the auditory system. The lateral tegmental system includes the superior colliculus, cuneiform nucleus (see MRF), and nucleus sagulum (Fig. 1A). Although they do not receive direct input from the lower auditory system, they each project to the auditory part of the thalamus (the medial genicu-late body). Thus, the lateral tegmental system may provide important nonauditory input to the auditory system.
