CD2 is a glycoprotein of 50 kDa expressed by the vast majority of non-B lymphocytes in humans. In the mouse, unlike in humans, CD2 is also present on B lymphocytes and, in the rat, on splenic macrophages. CD2 appears at the earliest level of T lineage ontogeny and demonstrates a remarkable structural conservation among species. Several differentially glycosylated forms have been found on the cell surface of human non-B lymphocytes. In the mouse, two distinct isotypic forms of CD2 exist in different strains.
