CD45 is an abundant transmembrane protein-tyrosine phosphatase (PTPase) expressed uniquely by all nucleated cells of hematopoietic origin. With regard to lymphocytes, CD45 functions to activate Src-family members involved in antigen receptor signaling. Recent studies have demonstrated that several transmembrane PTPases, including CD45, are involved in regulating adhesion and this may be a common theme to their function.
