Cells not belonging to the MPS

Reticulum cells and fibroblasts, present in connective and lymphoid tissues and in various organs, and mesothelial cells of serous cavities, have morphological characteristics giving them some resemblance to macrophages, with which they are often confused. However, these cells are not regarded as mononuclear phagocytes, because they lack other characteristics of macrophages. Furthermore, these cells do not originate in the bone marrow, but renew themselves by division locally in the tissues. Confusion has been caused by adjectives applied to the reticulum cells, histiocytic reticulum cells (syn. histiocytes) and interdigitating reticulum cells are macrophages, and dendritic reticulum cells, reticular cells, and metalophil cells are all reticulum cells.
