Characteristics of the Bunyaviridae

Bunyaviridae are enveloped RNA viruses about 100 nm in diameter containing a tripartite, single-stranded RNA genome of negative polarity (Figure 1). Virions contain three main proteins, namely the envelope glycoproteins Gl and G2, and the nucleo-capsid protein N, together with a minor large protein L. The three viral RNA species are designated as small (S), medium (M) and large (L), of which the S RNA encodes the N protein, the M RNA encodes the two envelope glycoproteins G'l and G2 and the L RNA encodes the large, virion-associated polymerase protein L.
