Characteristics of the organisms and their antigens

Classification

Based on properties of the proteins, sequence analysis of individual genes, order and number of genes encoded by the genome, and sequences of intergenic regions and the 3' and 5' noncoding regions, this family of viruses is divided into two subfamilies encompassing four genera. One subfamily, Para-myxovirinae, includes the paramyxoviruses, rubula-viruses and morbilliviruses, while the other, Pneumo-virinae, includes the single genus Pneumovirus. Individual members of each genus are listed in Table 1 as well as the proteins encoded by the viruses in each genus.

Virions

Paramyxoviridae virions are polymorphic structures composed of a helical nucleocapsid core surrounded by a lipid envelope with associated viral membrane proteins. Although filamentous forms can be seen, virions are usually roughly spherical (see Figure 1) with a diameter usually between 100 and 400 nm. Protruding 8-20 nm from the membrane are two spikes, one of which is a tetramer of the cell-attachment protein and the other a trimer or tetramer of the fusion protein. The lipid bilayer is derived from the host cell plasma membrane and.
