The mean incubation period from infection to the onset of symptoms is 4 weeks. Patients with hepatitis A often describe a vague illness appearing between 1 and 7 days prior to the onset of dark urine.

The first objective sign of disease is the onset of dark urine, which is followed within a few days by pale or clay-colored feces and yellow discoloration of the sclera, skin and mucous membranes. The return of color to the stools, which usually occurs within 2 or 3 weeks after the onset of illness, is a good sign of resolution of the disease.
