Dendritic cells and Langerhans cells

Epidermal Langerhans cells and follicular dendritic cells play important roles in antigen presentation and may be an important leukocyte source for virus-induced IFNa. Hence, infection of these cells maybe advantageous to the host, by stimulating T cell responses and facilitating the activation of NK cells and other IFN-dependent mechanisms of natural resistance. These cells express some CD4 and complement receptors, and it is of interest that they can be infected with HIV in vivo. In animals, viruses such as murine retroviruses, Aleutian disease of mink virus, and bovine lentivirus, have been shown to replicate in dendritic cells.
