Diapedesis of leukocytes under noninflammatory conditions

Under normal circumstances the vascular wall, composed of a monolayer of endothelial cells sited on a basement membrane, does not promote the adherence and transendothelial migration of circulating leukocytes. The nonthrombogenic and nonhemo-static surface properties of the endothelium and the narrow spaces (varying from 10 to 200 nm) between adjacent endothelial cells normally prevent cellular adherence and subsequent diapedesis. Diapedesis of leukocytes under noninflammatory conditions is mainly restricted to specific sites, the high-endo-thelial venules, bearing high-walled endothelium, where recirculating lymphocytes migrate from the blood circulation to the lymphatic compartment.
