A large number of host macromoiecules appear to be avidly associated with the outer envelope of T. pallidum. The biologic importance of this association, between host proteins and pathogen, seems to be considerable, as it may decrease the immuno-genicity of the latter, promoting its survival and induction of autoimmune responses. It is also speculated that the immunologically inert surface of the T. pallidum (paucity of intramembranous proteins: contributes to the organism's evasion of the host inflammatory response.
