CD45 isoform expression is dynamically controlled in both leukocyte differentiation and cellular activation. Isoform expression by a given population has been characterized by both amplification of this region of the mRNA by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and by a large assortment of monoclonal antibodies that recognize epitopes affected by the use of the alternative exons. The antibodies that recognize epitopes encoded by the alternatively spliced exons 4, 5 and 6 have been termed CD45RA, B and C, respectively.
