Granulocyte Colonystimulating Factor Gcsf

T Michael Dexter, Department of Experimental Haematology, Paterson Institute, Christie Hospital NHS Trust, Manchester, UK

The colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) were characterized by their ability to facilitate survival and to promote clonal proliferation and development of hematopoietic progenitor cells in vitro. Granulocyte CSF (G-CSF) is one member of this family of glycoproteins, which also includes granulocyte-macrophage CSF (GM-CSF), macrophage CSF (M-CSF), and multi-CSF (also known as interleukin 3, IL-3). G-CSF was distinguished from the other CSFs by its ability to induce differentiation and clonal extinction in certain myeloid leukemia cell lines, and by its capacity to promote almost exclusively the development of neutrophils from normal hematopoietic progenitor cells. It shows a high degree of cross-specific activity, indicating strong evolutionary conservation.
