IgG Fc-binding proteins have also been described on the surface of other bacteria, including Haemophilus somnus, Clostridium perfringens, Brucella abortus, Taylorella equigenitalis and Gardnerella vaginalis. In addition, bacterial binding proteins that display nonimmune reactivity with immunoglobulin isotypes other than IgG have been described (Table 2). These include proteins that bind constant regions in IgD or IgA. Other proteins have been recognized that bind regions within constant portions of the

F(ab)'2 fragments as well as molecules that show selective reactivity with immunoglobulin light chains. To date, a bacterial protein with absolute selectivity for the Fc region of IgM from any species has not been described. A B. abortus protein with reactivity for certain bovine IgM allotypes, a Clostridium difficile toxin protein that displays preferential reactivity with murine IgM, and a potential IgM-spe-cific lectin-like molecule of Borrelia burgdorferi have been reported.
