failed to recover any when Mus cervicolor sperm was used.

Concerning interspecific hybrids, special mention must be made of Mus spretus because of the very large number of allelic differences involved when intercrosses are set up with any of the standard laboratory strains. Whatever the cloned DNA probe used, experience shows that it is relatively easy to find suitable restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLPs) segregating between Mus spretus and laboratory strains such as C57BL/6 or BALB/c so that checking the progeny of an interspecific backcross makes gene mapping not only easier but sometimes the only way. The technique used for the first time by Robert and coworkers has been summarized in Guenet (1986). Similar crosses could be done with either Mus macedonicus or Mus spicilegus. However, they show a lesser degree of divergence from Mus musculus than Mus spretus.
