mRNA are not known. Littman and coworkers have identified and characterized a T cell-specific enhancer located 13 kb upstream of the transcriptional initiation site of the mouse and human CD4 genes. They also have demonstrated the existence of an intronic regulatory region located between the first and second exons of the murine gene. The element is orientation and position independent. This negative regulatory region functions in combination with heterologous c/s-acting regulatory elements, indicating that it is a developmentally regulated transcriptional silencer.
