Those antibodies which cross-react with the listed primate species are indicated by a +. The absence of a + does not necessarily indicate that the antibody does not cross-react, since not all antibodies have been tested for cross-reactivity in these primates. Macaca mulatta (Mamu) = rhesus monkey; Callithrix jacchus (Caja) = common marmoset, and Saguinus oedipus (Saoe) = cotton-top tamarin. ■'Note that the CD3-specific mAb FN 18 is a rhesus-specific anti-CD3 mAb.

mAbs have been tested in two species of New World primates, the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) and the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Not all monclonal antibodies that cross-react with surface expressed molecules from the rhesus macaque work well in New World primates. Table 1 provides a list of those mAbs which also cross-react with lymphocytes from the common marmoset and cotton-top tamarin. However, these results were taken from a study in which only 62% of mAbs specific for human epitopes were found to cross-react with New World primate lymphocytes. Therefore, although a significant number of mAbs are able to bind to both human and New World primate cell lines, indicating the preservation of functionally important cell surface molecules between these species, the percentage of mAbs which cross-react decreases the further one travels across the phylogenetic tree.
