Regulators of complement activation (RCA) gene cluster on human chromosome 1

This cluster includes genes for complement receptors CR1 and CR2, the decay-accelerating factor (DAF), the membrane cofactor protein (MCP), factor H (HF), and the C4-binding protein (C4BP). All six proteins share common sequence motifs called short consensus repeats (SCR) of about 60 amino acids in length. In addition, multiple RNA transcripts due to alternative splicing have been described for most members of this cluster. Since this tightly-linked gene family controls the activity of the complement system, it is hard to escape the conclusion that genetic linkage is the evolutionary concept for the maintenance of closely related functions.
