Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a growth factor for T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, where it induces Gp to S-phase progression, and a differentiation factor for B cells, where it induces immunoglobulin secretion. The high-affinity IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) is composed of three distinct chains, designated a, 3 and yc. Intracellular signaling is initiated by ligand-induced heterodimerization of the IL-2R 3 and yc chains, which results in the activation of multiple intracellular kinases, including members of the Janus kinase (JAK) family. These biochemical events induce expression of a variety of target genes with mitogenic and differentiative functions.
