Interleukin 4 Receptor

Achsah D Keegan, Department of Immunology, Jerome H Holland Laboratory, American Red Cross, Rockville, Maryland, USA

Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a cytokine, produced by T cells, mast cells and basophils, that elicits a diverse array of biological responses. These functions range from the regulation of helper T cell phenotype and the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) by B lymphocytes to the regulation of the adhesive properties of endothelial cells via VCAM-1 and the regulation of ion secretion by intestinal epithelial cells. In keeping with this diverse array of biological effects, high-affinity binding sites for IL-4 (Kd 20-300 pM) have been detected on a variety of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cell types at levels ranging from 100 to 5000 sites per cell.
