Interleukin 5 (IL-5) controls the production of eosinophils. It has remarkable biological specificity in vivo. Overexpression leads to eosinophilia, and gene ablation or treatment with anti-IL-5 antibody abolishes eosinophilia. While IL-5 has activity on B cells in the mouse in vitro, the biological role of this activity remains doubtful. Furthermore, human IL-5 has little if any activity on human B cells in vitro.
