The most common members of the genus Klebsiella are K. pneumoniae, K. planticola, K. oxytoca, K. ter-rigena and Klebsiella group 47. Two former species, K. ozaenae and K. rhinoscleromatis are now considered to be biochemically inactive strains of K. pneumoniae. Of these, the most commonly isolated pathogen is K. pneumoniae, also known as Friedlan-der's bacillus. As its name implies, it is usually isolated from cases of pneumonia, but it can infect other parts of the body, such as the urinary tract and wounds. Because of its overwhelming importance, this entry will deal exclusively with K. pneumoniae.
