Communication between cells involved in the immune response requires cell-to-cell interactions and the production of soluble messengers which may act in a paracrine or autocrine manner. The presentation of antigen by macrophages to T lymphocytes requires a direct cell-to-cell interaction, but cytokines are also produced during this process which control the induction of immunity. Lipid mediators derived from cell membranes, such as the prostaglandins, are also produced during T cell-macrophage interactions and may modulate the behavior of immunocompetent cells.
