SWR/J Origin

'Swiss' mice {row Lausanne, inbred at the Rockefeller Institute from about 1926 (Lynch, 1969). Now widely used in research as a general-purpose strain. Carries a Mus musculus domesticus-origin Y chromosome (Tucker et al, 1992).

Predominant characteristics

1. High level of cholelithiasis (gallstones) (Khanuja et al, 1995).

2. Carries no detectable endogenous ectropic MuLV DNA sequences (Jenkins et al, 1982).

3. Resistant to diet-induced obesity (West et al, 1994).

4. Susceptible to spontaneous and induced ovarian granulosa cell tumors (Beamer et al, 1985, 1993) and susceptible to DMH-induced colon carcinogenesis (Rosenberg et al, 1995).

Immunological parameters

Hemolytic complement-deficient (Rhodes et al, 1980). Pertussis HSF responsive (Wardlaw, 1970).
