Reovirus Infection And Immunity

Amy Hodson Thompson, Lucille London and Steven D London, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina, USA

Mammalian reoviruses are the prototype members of the Orthoreovirus genus of the Reoviridae family of segmented, double-stranded (ds) RNA viruses. Reovirus virions are nonenveloped and consist of two concentric protein capsids. While originally isolated from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts of humans, reovirus (reo - respiratory and enteric orphan virus) infections do not appear to be a source of major symptomatic respiratory or enteric disease. However, they are ubiquitous in the environment and the majority of the human population acquires a reovirus-specific antibody response in infancy or early childhood. Reovirus infection of rodents provides an excellent model for the study of viral pathogenesis and host immune responses at both systemic and mucosal sites.
