Research uses

Some experiments, such as those involving the transfer of cells or tissues between individuals without immunological rejection, can usually only be done with inbred strains or immunodeficient strains (which are not always easy to maintain). In other cases, comparison of the responses of two or more strains, particularly if the strains differ at a relevant genetic locus, can be highly informative.

There are a few experiments for which inbred strains are unsuitable. In some cases, their use is rejected because they arc more expensive than out-bred animals, though this may be a false economy. They may be unsuitable for experiments which require a very good breeding performance, and for certain genetic experiments such as those aimed at changing strain characteristics by selection. CGenerally, the advantages of inbred strains are so overwhelming that, where available, they should be used for all research unless a case is specifically made to use an alternative type of stock.
