Structures of leukocyte and endothelial cell adhesion molecules

In the course of an inflammatory response, leukocytes are recruited to activated vascular endothelium by adhesion interactions of increasing strength. Selectins are responsible for the initial low avidity (protein/carbohydrate) interactions. Firm adhesion is achieved by high avidity (protein/protein) interactions between leukocyte integrins and their endothelial ligands. Structures of binding domains of key molecules have been determined and are shown in Figure 2.
