Summary

The current data on conditioned and stress-associated alterations of immunologic reactivity produce compelling evidence of a fundamental integration of behavioral, neuroendocrine and immune processes of adaptation. It now appears that, like all other biological systems functioning in the interests of homeostasis, the immune system is integrated with other psychophysiologic processes and therefore is subject to regulation or modulation by the brain. Conversely, immune processes seem to have implications for neural and endocrine function, including behavior. As such, they provide evidence for the in vivo bidirectionality of interactions between the immune system and the central nervous system.
