Transplantation

A consequence of recognition of class I proteins with virus peptides bound is that the immune system recognizes different alleles with considerable vigor. Class I proteins that differ in sequence bind different sets of peptides, but importantly arc recognized by large numbers of T cells. The requirements for allore-cognition are still a matter of debate, but clearly T cells which recognize allogeneic MHC bound to a specific peptide and those which are indifferent to the bound peptide both exist. The consequences of the recognition are profound. Mice that differ only in a single class I product, either by production of a transgenic line or by spontaneous mutation are able to mount rapid and effective graft rejection. The cellular mechanism of rejection involves both CL)4 and CD8 T cells, and results in rapid organ graft rejection.
