Classification

Hepatitis A virus is a member of the Picornaviridae family and the sole member of the genus Hepata-virus. There are four recognized genotypes, but only one serotype.

HAV is spherical, nonenveloped and measures 27-28 nm diameter; it is more resistant to heat than other picornaviruses, remaining stable after incubation at 56°C for 30 min, several weeks at room temperature and years at —20°C, although it can be inactivated by heat (121°C for 30 min) or exposure to hypochlorite (1.5-2.5 mg 1 1 for 15 min). The virus is known to infect humans, juvenile chimpanzees and several Saguinus species of marmosets.
