Right Sided Infective Endocarditis

Isolated tricuspid valve (TV) endocarditis is rare, except in the setting of intravenous drug abuse. Valve surgery is infrequent in isolated TV endocarditis, because of less pronounced impact on hemodynamics compared to the involvement of aortic or mitral valve. Involvement of the TV, however, does often accompany left-sided IE. In any case, surgical procedures on the TV mostly involve repair, and not replacement, owing to the anatomic and hemodynamic characteristics of the TV and the right heart. The principles and techniques of TV surgical procedures are similar to those for the mitral valve.
