responded to both stimuli regardless of the trial type. Type 3 cells (27%) responded to a single stimulus regardless of trial type. Type 4 neurons (3%) altered their activity in response to one stimulus during simple trials, but not compound trials.

The most interesting firing pattern with respect to the focus of this chapter was that demonstrated by type 1 cells. These cells responded during compound, but not simple trials and were easily the most common type of firing pattern recorded. Importantly, the onset of the neuronal response occurred not at the onset of the first compound stimulus, but at the onset of the second stimulus. This is the exact time that divided attention is needed.
