Conclusion

A disaster occurs when the sociocultural structure of a group is vulnerable and an event overwhelms the limits of that system. Looking at such an event cross-culturally, holistically, and diachronically through a cultural meaning lens is the approach anthropology takes to investigate disasters of all types. The study of disasters and the processes of recovering is a fertile field for anthropologists who can use such situations to develop theory and practice related to adaptation and survival.
