Non-Mendelian modes of inheritance have received increased attention during the past few decades. Several lines of evidence, such as twin studies and animal models, had long suggested that certain human conditions were likely inherited; however, classic Mendelian models failed to explain their observed patterns of inheritance. While yet controversial, some of these modes—especially certain epigenetic7 modes such as genomic imprinting and anticipation—are promising.
