General microbiology

For a general overview of the world of microorganisms and their applications, there can be no better starting point than John Postgate's classic Microbes and Man, 4th edition (2000), published by Cambridge University Press. Those wishing to study microbiology in greater depth may consider one of the many excellent general microbiology texts available; the following are well-established examples that embrace the whole field of microbiology, and cover many topics in greater depth than is possible or indeed desirable in the present book.
