Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a relatively common single gene disorder with widely varied, progressive features. Management is currently focused on clinical diagnosis, surveillance, symptomatic treatment, anticipatory guidance, and genetic counseling. Since the identification of the NF1 gene much has been learned about pathophysi-ology, indicating that the gene functions as a tumor suppressor. Genetic testing is now a clinical reality, and clinical trials have begun, raising hope of development of nonsurgical treatments in the near future.
