The increase in the incidence of pertussis, the fact that other agents can cause a pertussislike syndrome, and the possible adaptation of Bordetella pertussis populations to vaccine-induced immunity underscore the need for simultaneous detection, identification, and genetic typing of B. pertussis to enable rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnosis for treatment and prevention. This article discusses recent developments in the laboratory diagnosis of Bordetella infections and the epidemiological typing of B. pertussis as well as future prospects in the field.
