Introduction

Alpha-thalassemias are genetic defects, very common among some populations, characterized by the reduction (alpha+) or complete absence (alpha0) of alpha-globin chain production. A large number of alpha-thalassemia alleles have been described and their interaction results in a wide spectrum of hematological and clinical pheno-types, ranging from the silent carrier state to the very severe condition of hemoglobin Bart's hydrops fetalis syndrome, which is lethal in utero or soon after birth.
