Treatment typically consists of clindamycin or tetracycline combined with penicillin.1-16-1 Aggressive surgical debridement including radical amputation (where possible) to remove the infected tissue is mandatory.1-17-1 An alternative supplemental therapy involving hyperbaric oxygen (thought to raise the tissue redox above that required for growth of C. perfringens) is also available.1-19-1 Patients with gas gangrene in an extremity have a better prognosis than patients with truncal or intraabdominal gas gangrene because it is easier to remove infected tissues in extremities.1-16-1 Those patients presenting with shock at diagnosis have the highest mortality rate.[16-
