There are currently 18 drugs licensed for use against HIV-1 and they are shown in Table 1. The compounds are active against the viral protease (protease inhibitors) and reverse transcriptase ( nucleoside, nucleotide, and nonnucleoside analogues) enzymes. Other drugs in development include compounds directed against other viral targets such as integrase inhibitors and fusion inhibitors.
