An important application of PFGE is the comparative analysis of nosocomial pathogens. It is clear that specific etiological agents can be transferred between patients in hospital settings and cause nosocomial infections. Rapidly assessing the clonal relatedness of these isolates is critical in determining the extent of outbreak spread and the strategies for containment. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis is most often considered the typing technique of choice to examine the true genetic identity of the bacterial isolates in an outbreak investigation.1-11-1 Figure 1 shows a variety of PFGE patterns that were generated when methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) chromosomal DNA was digested with Smal restriction enzyme.
