The distribution of the bacterium in the environment seems to be ubiquitous. The DNA of the bacterium has been detected in excretions (feces) of patients suffering from WD and in sewage water.[14,15] The bacterial DNA was also found in saliva, gastric fluid of healthy humans, so that it seems possible that it can survive outside cells and body fluids are the way of distribution.1-16,17-1 Normally, the bacterium can be found within membrane-bound vesicles in the cytoplasm of macrophages as well as in many other cell types such as plasma cells, granulo-cytes, epithel cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and lymphocytes.
