Therapy and Prognosis

Treatment of retinoblastoma depends on tumor stage, the number of tumor foci (unifocal, unilateral multifocal, or bilateral disease), localization and size of the tumor(s) within the eye, presence of vitreous seeding, and the age of the child. Treatment options include enucleation, external-beam radiation, systemic chemotherapy, cryo-therapy, photocoagulation, brachytherapy with episcleral plaques. Following successful treatment, children require frequent follow-up examinations for early detection of new intraocular tumors. If the tumor(s) have not invaded extraocular tissues, treatment is favorable in most patients.
