Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxins

In 1981, Bergdoll et al. identified enterotoxin F, an exotoxin that caused TSS.[8] However, it was renamed toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) because of its lack of emetic activity (Table 1). Despite its similar biological activities and three-dimensional structure, TSST-1 is generally considered to be different from other PTSAgs, forming its own group comprising—in addition to the classical TSST-1—a minor variant, TSSTovine. Compared to other staphylococcal PTSAgs, TSST-1 is shorter and has no cysteines. Unlike the SEs, TSST-1 is able to cross the mucosa.
