Virulenceassociated Genes

Cholera is characterized by a severe watery diarrhea caused by toxigenic V. cholerae, which colonizes the small intestines and produces an enterotoxin, CT.[3] Although production of CT encoded by the ctxAB genes is directly responsible for the manifestation of diarrhea, cholera pathogenesis relies on the synergistic action of a number of other genes, such as colonization TCP and outer membrane protein (ompU), and a regulatory protein, ToxR, which coregulates the expression of CT and TCP,[3] and part of the CTX-genetic element comprising zonula occludens toxin (zot) and accessory cholera enterotoxin (ace), which are virulence factors and also play a role in the morphogenesis of the filamentous phage CTXO.[19]
