Asplenium Hybrids

The aspleniums appear never to miss a chance to hybridize, not only once, but also on many occasions backcrossing with parents. Great extended families are in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States, the British Isles, and most of Europe with limited crosses elsewhere. The most common are described in the text. The following include some that are in cultivation in gardens of specialists as well as some to entertain (as in a scavenger hunt) horticultural and botanical explorers: Asplenium xclermontae (A. ruta-muraria x A. trichomanes), A. xdolosum (A. adiantum-nigrum x A. trichomanes), A.

xgravesii (A. bradleyi x A. pinnatifidum), A. xherbwagneri (A. pinnatifidum x A. trichomanes), A. xheufleri (A. septentrionale x A. trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens), A. xkentuckiense (A. pinnatifidum x A. platyneuron), A. xlessinense (A. fissum x A. viride), A. xmurbeckii (A. ruta-muraria x A. septentrionale), A. xpagesii (A. foreziensex A. trichomanes), A. xposcharskyanum (A. adulterinum x A. viride), A. xtrudellii (A. montanum x A. pinnatifidum), A. xvirginicum (A. platyneuron x A. trichomanes), and A. xwherryi (A. bradleyi x A. montanum).

In addition some hybrids involve nothosubspecies (nothospecies is a species derived from existing species, usually originating following hybridization between species): Asplenium xlovisianum (A. trichomanes subsp. hastatum x A. trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens), A. xlucanum (A. tri-chomanes subsp. inexpectans x A. trichomanes subsp. quadri-

valens), A. xlusaticum (A. trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens x A. trichomanes subsp. trichomanes), A. xmelzeranum (A. tri-chomanes subsp. hastatum x A. trichomanes subsp. inex-pectans), A. xmoravicum (A. trichomanes subsp. hastatum x A. trichomanes subsp. pachyrachis [synonym A. csikii]), and A. xstaufferi (A. trichomanes subsp. pachyrachis x A. trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens).

Especially rare bigeneric hybrids of interest are Aspleno-phyllitis xconfluens (Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens x Phyllitis scolopendrium), Asplenophyllitis xjacksonii (Asplenium adiantum-nigrum x Phyllitis scolopendrium), and Asplenophyllitis xmicrodon (Asplenium obovatum subsp. bil-lotii x Phyllitis scolopendrium). The one extremely rare tri-generic hybrid is Asplenium ebenoides x Phyllitis scolopendrium ([Aspleniumplatyneuronx Camptosorusrhizophyllus] x Phyllitis scolopendrium).
