A myriad of research technologies need to exist (e.g., genomics, medicinal chemistry, and transgenics). Also, standard product development functions in both research and development areas are required (e.g., toxicology, pharmaceutics formulations, process engineering, and regulatory affairs). Marketing engagement is needed for strategic leadership and their product and health care data and planning. Integration, communication, collaboration, prioritization, and guidance are absolute requirements, which also demands planning, tracking, and decision making. However, patients with nonfrontal tumors may also exhibit executive deficits because the frontal lobes have rich afferent and efferent connections with all other brain regions, disrupting the bidirectional modulatory influences on cognition and thus causing impairment in social functioning, motivation, and judgment.

The Clinical Trial Simulation Project

The planning for the Phase II trial began prior to the candidate entering Phase I. Because the proposed dose-finding objectives were much more ambitious than those of a typical Phase IIa POC trial, we also began planning a clinical trial simulation (CTS) project to support the design process. A colleague who was not a regular clinical project team member led the CTS project. This administrative arrangement was necessary because the regular team members could not devote sufficient time, within the project schedule, to conduct a project of the proposed scope. In addition, a secondary project goal was a more general exploration of the usefulness of the methodology and of the performance characteristics of some novel (for us, at least) criteria for optimizing trial design in early clinical development.

It is very important at this stage to identify what could be major failures. From the top management's identification of the necessary outcomes from the innovation strategy, the requirements of the product mix development and from previous measures used by the company in measuring success in past projects, the team needs to develop a group of measures for those product areas (see Chapter 1 for possible measures of success failure). They can be quantitative, such as meeting certain sales revenues or profits, product costs, project costs, time for development or time to build sales.
